About Us

Zafirta Diamonds was established in early 2019 as part of Zafirta
Group, Doha, Qatar. Our initial plan was to source rough diamonds from Africa, and we kept an open mind on how this would work. We had heard all the horror stories but thought “how hard can it actually be?” After spending over 6 months in various countries in Africa, we can safely say all the horror stories are true!

Vast majority of natural diamonds

The Diamonds come from Botswana, South Africa, and Namibia, all of which have state control over the industry. This means, that even to buy a small number of rough diamonds, a lot of govt officials needed to be paid off. Even then there is no guarantee you will manage to get your parcel of diamonds out of the country.
Things are a little less organized in Zimbabwe, but there, too, the overwhelming majority of diamonds are controlled by organs of the state. For some excitement, we also went to the Congo. There was a bit of a civil war going on at the time, so we made sure we increased our life insurance coverage before booking our flight.

Angola and Sierra

Angola is chairman of the Kimberley Process, which was set up in 2003 to end the sale of blood diamonds. Consequently, most of their diamonds have a paper trail attached, and they’re sold in offices rather than the bush.
In late 2019, we managed to make the right connections and a slow drip of diamond parcels began reaching us. All ethically sourced (which is 50% of the problem) and with full Kimberley certs.

Early 2020

The covid pandemic caught the world by surprise and travel became near on impossible, so we were back to the drawing board. We had been disheartened by the experience in Africa, large corporations were doing well in the diamond trade in these countries but there seemed to be no benefit to the local citizens. From an ethics point of view, it was not sustainable!
Mid 2021, we started looking into lab-created diamonds, two of our directors were UK based and they managed to find a couple of experts in the field of creating lab-grown diamonds, who were also based in the UK.

So, if lab diamonds are cheaper, what’s their future value?

It took almost 6 months of hard work, sourcing the necessary technology, and a very large investment, but it paid off. Our first lab-grown diamonds were produced in Nov 2021. We have since then used a trial-and-error process to improve the size, colour, and quality of the lab diamonds we produce until we got to the point in Jun 2022 that we were satisfied our lab diamonds could compete with the best in the world! We now have a UK-based workforce of 6 people producing our diamonds and power our machines through a waste to energy system, thereby leaving a very small carbon footprint Our head office moved to Dubai in August 2022, though all our lab diamonds will always be produced in the UK, and our website went live in mid-August with about 100 exceptional diamonds.

We are Best

Though we still ethically source some diamonds from Africa, the majority of our stock are lab diamonds, produced by ourselves, which means we are able to offer the general public beautiful coloured and white stones of the highest quality
Although not the biggest, we feel we are the best!
